Mining

Mining is the process or getting various ores from different rocks located all around Runescape. The ores collected can be used for crafting or smithing, and if done well mining can be a good way of making money.

Here is the list of all the ores, and what mining level you need and how much experience is recieved per mined ore.

Ore Mining Level ExperienceInformation
Clay 1 5 Used for low level crafting
Copper 1 17.5 Combined with tin to make bronze bars
Tin 1 17.5 Combined with copper to make bronze
Iron 15 35 Used for iron smithing
Silver 20 40 Used to craft holy/unholy* symbols and sickles*
Coal 30 50 Used for all higher ore smithing
Gold 40 65 Used to craft jewellry
Mithril 55 80 Used for smithing mithril
Adamantite 70 95 Used for smithing Addamantite
Runite 85 125 Used to smith Rune, ore only found in lvl 44 wilderness

Not only does raising your mining level increase the types of ores you are capable of mining, but there are also different types of pick axes that are used.

Pick AxeMining Level NeededShop Price
Bronze 1 1gp
Iron 1 140gp
Steel 6 510gp
Mithril 21 1300gp
Adamantite 31 3200gp
Runite 41 32000gp

Raising your mining level not only allows you to mine better and more valuable ores, but also increases the rate and chances of mining ores. This is good because it cuts down on time and allows you to get ores before someone else does. Pick axes also increase these rates.

Random Encounters

While mining there are a few random encounters that can occur.
Rock golems, which levels are based on your own can sometimes attack. When killed, much like other random encounters only drop small inexpensive items and give very little experience. It is recommended to not bother killing them and run, unless you want to keep your dignity and prove yourself to others.
Sometimes rocks containing ores will begin to smoke. DO NOT mine them! They will damage you lightly and break your pick axe, where you must then go to the axe shop to get it repaired.
Finally, your pick axe head may fly off. All you have to do is pick it up and reattach it to the stick.

Depending on whether you're mining for smithing, crafting or just mining for mining experience, then I have a few recommended guidelines to follow:

When Mining for Crafting - There are three stages; clay, silver and gold. Mine clay until you are able to craft holy symbols (level 16), Then make holy symbols. I recommend to not make gold jewellry unless you have gems, because holy symbols are faster and give more crafting exp.

When Mining for Smithing - smithing lvl 1-15 - bronze, lvl 15-30 iron, lvl 30-70 - steel, lvl 70+ - steel or whatever you are capable. Steel smithing gives the fastest experience compared to mith, addy or rune.

When Mining for Mining - Iron is the easy and fastest way to level up mining. Either mining and dropping or storing it in the bank, it quickly reappears and usually is found in packs of at least 3 rocks.
