Runecrafting

Runecrafting was a skill created at the beginning of Runescape II as a way for Jagex to balance the newly created "Wilderness Triangle" by lowering rune prices. Runecrafting didn't come out as welcomed as Jagex had hoped due to the fact that you have to take long trips just for a small amount of runes. Massive improvements have been made to the skill, however, and it is now more popular than ever.

1. Basics of Runecrafting

There are three essential components to runecrafting: the temple, the talisman, and the rune essence.

To begin the skill of runecrafting, you have to complete the quest "Rune Mysteries" (look in the quest guide for details). Upon completion, the quest awards you with an air talisman and access to various teleports to the rune essence mine.

Rune Essence

Rune essence is basically an unenchanted rune, their relations to the rune is similar to an ore's relation to a bar. Unlike runes, however, they are unstackable.

Here are the following rune essence teleport locations: Head Wizard of the wizard tower, Aubury the rune seller in Varrock, Brimstail in an isolated cave in the southwestern parts of the gnome stronghold, Distentor in the Magic Guild, Wizard Cromptery in northeastern Ardougne.

Of these locations, Aubury is closest to a bank.

To obtain rune essence, you will need a pickaxe. Rune essence is quite an easy ore to mine. You will get one every hit depending on the speed of your pickaxe. Unlike other ores, rune essence has an endless supply per rock, which makes it that much easier.

Temples and Talismans

Temples are places where you actually make your runes. To enter a temple, you must use the corresponding talisman with it. A temple will appear as a scenery object called "Mysterious Ruins" all mysterious ruins look the same and have no markings to indicate which rune they represent.

So how does one know which mysterious ruins is which? Simple, use a talisman. Talismans are tools of which you use to enter temples by using them on mysterious ruins. To find out which mysterious ruin you are to go to, simply right-click on the talisman and select the "Locate" option. Your chatbox will then give you a general direction of which to walk towards.

You get the air talisman at the end of the rune mysteries quest. Other talismans you can obtain by killing various monsters. Here's a list of the top droppers of each talisman.

Air-Rune Mysteries Quest
Water-Wizards, Dark Wizards, Water Elementals
Earth-Wizards, Dark Wizards
Fire-Dark Wizards, Pyrefiends, Fire Giants, Fire Elementals
Mind-Wizards, Imps
Body-Guards, Hill Giants
Cosmic (Members Only)-Shadow Warriors, Otherworldly Beings
Chaos (Members Only)-Moss Giants, Fire Giants
Nature (Members Only)-Jogres, Shadow Warriors
Law (Members Only)-Troll Stronghold Quest

After using your talisman on the ruins, simply click on the slab of stone in the center of the temple to turn all the rune essence you have on you into runes. Here are the general locations of the Mysterious Ruins.

Air-Outskirts of southern Falador
Water-Lumbridge Swamp
Earth-East of Varrock, close to wilderness
Fire-Al Kharid, next to duel arena
Mind-West of the Monastery, edge of wilderness
Body-West of Barbarian Village, past the fence
Cosmic-Zanaris
Chaos-Level 5 Wilderness
Nature-Deep Karamjan Jungle, North of Shilo Village
Law-Entrana

2. Level Advancements

People probably won't want to walk all the way from right above the mining guild to the outskirts of Falador just for a measly 27 air runes, so Jagex decided that the higher level you are, the more runes per essence you get. Here's the leveling table:

Rune 1 per essence 2 per essence 3 per essence 4 per essence 5 per essence 6 per essence 7 per essence 8 per essence
Air 1 11 22 33 44 55 66 77
Mind 2 14 28 42 56 70 84 98
Water 5 19 38 57 76 95 - -
Earth 9 26 52 78 - - - -
Fire 14 35 70 - - - - -
Body 20 46 92 - - - - -
Cosmic 27 59 - - - - - -
Chaos 35 74 - - - - - -
Nature 44 91 - - - - - -

3. Combo Runes (Members Only)

In the wilderness, mages have the least space for food since the have to carry up to 9 types of runes. None of which they can equip. Jagex has made it so that you can combine two elemental runes into one.

Here's how it works. You need the following supplies: Talismans of the runes you want to combine, rune essence, and runes of one of the types you want to combine.

Let's say I want to combine fire and air runes. I would take both talismans, essence, and air runes to the fire temple. I would then use my airs runes with the slab of rock. Now my rune essences are eaten up, my air talisman is gone, and I have some smoke runes in my inventory.

I could also do the same thing at the air alter, only then I would have to bring fire runes.

This combining runes process is long and tedious because the runes only have a 50% chance of combining (the other runes and essence just disappear). How do you fix this problem? Get an emerald necklace (Not amulet) and enchant it with the spell "enchant level 2 jewlery". You will then get a necklace of binding, which allows 15 runes to be successfully combined at 100% rate.

4. Tiaras

Tiaras are used to save inventory space while runecrafting. These things are worn on your head and lets you enter its corresponding temple by simply left-clicking on the ruins instead of having to use a talisman on it. This gives room for one more essence, which could mean a lot at high runecrafting levels.

Making a tiara is simple, get a bar of silver, a tiara mould, and use the silver on a furnace to make an unenchanted tiara. You need level 23 crafting to do so.

Afterwards, simply go to the alter of the tiara you want to make. Then use the talisman on the alter. You now have an enchanted tiara.

Enchanting tiaras give massive runecrafting experience, but obtaining all that silver and talismans can be a hassle.

5. The Abyss (Members Only)

The Abyss is an incredibly fast way of making runes. The bad part is, it's in the wilderness. And as soon as you enter the abyss, you get skulled and have all your prayer points drained.

To gain access to the abyss, talk to a Zamorackian Mage in level 5 wilderness directly north of Edgeville. He will quickly tell you do meet him in Varrock. Make your way to the Chaos Temple in Varrock Southeast of Aubury's rune shop. The Mage will give you a crystal and tell you to teleport to the rune essence from 3 different locations. Do so and return to the mage. The mage will then give you access to the abyss and a runecrafting pouch to hold 3 essences in.

To enter the abyss, go back to the mage in level 5 wilderness and right-click on him, then select "teleport". When you're in the abyss, you will be swarmed by a bunch of monsters.

Simply evade these monsters and pick one of the entrances to go into the inner ring.

These entrances include:

Boil-Req Firemaking (Tinderbox)
Eyes-Req Thieving
Passage-Req Agility
Rocks-Req Mining (Pickaxe)
Tendrils-Req Woodcutting (Pickaxe)

Afterwards, simply go in through one of the rune portals to your destination. After you've crafted your runes, teleport to Edgeville with your glory amulet to bank and redo the abyss again.
